Associated Press sets its standards for generative AI

The Associated Press (AP) has developed guidelines for using generative AI in its reporting, emphasizing accuracy, fairness, and speed as its guiding values while not seeing AI as a replacement for journalists.

AP has a licensing agreement with OpenAI for its own news content but prohibits the use of ChatGPT and the like to create publishable content. AI-generated output is treated as unvetted source material and is subject to AP's sourcing standards. The guidelines also prohibit altering photos, video or audio with generative AI and require accurate attribution of AI-generated illustrations used in news stories. Journalists are urged not to input confidential information into AI tools and to take care to ensure that material from other sources is free of AI-generated content.
