It seems that GPT-5, or at least OpenAI's next large AI model, is getting closer to release.
According to two anonymous sources from Businessinsider, OpenAI is planning to release a significantly improved version of ChatGPT with GPT-5 this summer. Some enterprise customers are said to have already received demos of the latest model and its ChatGPT improvements.
According to these sources, GPT-5 should be "significantly better" than the previous version, GPT-4, from March 2023. The recent "laziness" of GPT-4 is supposed to be gone in GPT-5.
GPT-5 is still in the training phase and will be tested internally for safety before release, according to Businessinsider's sources. OpenAI hopes that GPT-5 will be more reliable and will impress both public and enterprise customers.
The exact release date has not been set and may be delayed by the testing process. A CEO who recently saw a version of GPT-5 was reportedly impressed, highlighting its ability to trigger AI agents to perform tasks autonomously. Earlier rumors already suggested that OpenAI might be moving in the direction of AI agents soon.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently confirmed that an "amazing" new AI model will be released later this year. However, he also mentioned that OpenAI has several "other important things" to release before GPT-5 is ready. The name of this upcoming model is still to be decided, according to Altman.
A recent OpenAI blog article briefly indexed by search engines mentioned an unannounced GPT-4.5 Turbo. This fits well with Altman's statements, suggesting that the release of GPT-5 might not be imminent. The blog article also mentioned an end to AI training in June 2024, which aligns with Businessinsider's report that the model is still in the training phase.
