Key Points

  • OpenAI publishes a guide for educators on how to use ChatGPT wisely in the classroom, with tips and answers to frequently asked questions.
  • The guide warns of potentially biased, inaccurate, or inappropriate ChatGPT content and recommends close monitoring and sharing of ChatGPT conversations to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • OpenAI discourages the use of AI detectors to detect AI-generated content, instead recommending that such interactions be documented by students and emphasizing the need for human oversight when evaluating students.

OpenAI's ChatGPT is used by students and teachers. For the latter, OpenAI has now published a guide.

Like the Internet, ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can be useful in an educational context if used wisely, says OpenAI. To encourage this, the company now offers a guide for educators that provides tips for using ChatGPT and answers frequently asked questions.

OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can generate biased, inaccurate, or inappropriate content. As a result, the company advises close monitoring of ChatGPT output when using it with students. Teachers are also encouraged to share ChatGPT conversations with students to promote transparency and accountability.

OpenAI discourages the use of AI detectors

In terms of detecting AI-generated content, OpenAI states that current AI detectors do not work and, in the worst case, classify human content as AI-generated. Instead, the company suggests that students document their interactions with AI. This would allow teachers to analyze students' critical thinking and AI skills.

For student assessment, OpenAI advises human oversight, saying, "It is inadvisable and against our Usage Policies to rely on models for assessment decision purposes without a 'human in the loop'." However, the system could be used to provide additional perspectives on student work to supplement teacher feedback.

OpenAI also provides prompts for lesson planning, further explanation, or independent study. OpenAI says it created the guide with input from education experts.
