Academic publisher Elsevier launched Scopus AI, an AI platform that enables researchers and institutions to use generative AI to quickly and accurately obtain summaries and insights into relevant research from other authors.

Scopus AI is powered by the peer-reviewed content of Scopus, the world's largest database of curated scientific literature. Since its alpha release in August 2023, thousands of researchers worldwide have tested Scopus AI and provided feedback for further development, the company said.

Scopus AI uses generative AI to power literature searches

Key features include "Expanded and Enhanced Summaries", "Foundational and Influential Papers", "Academic Expert Search", and "Expanded Breadth of Research".

The Expanded and Enhanced Summaries allow researchers to get a quick overview of further research and identify gaps in the literature. According to a press release, Scopus AI minimizes the risk of AI hallucinations (false information generated by AI) by using reliable and verified knowledge from the world's largest curated database of scientific literature.

Foundational and Influential Papers categorizes studies and is designed to help researchers accurately identify important studies and keep track of scientific progress. Academic Expert Search identifies leading experts in a field and provides explanations of relevant expertise. Finally, Enhanced Breadth of Research covers the last ten years of indexed content in Scopus and is designed to provide a broader perspective on relevant topics.

Scopus and Scopus AI differentiate from ChatGPT with per-review and independent expert panel

Scopus includes more than 29,200 peer-reviewed journals from more than 7,000 publishers, which Elsevier says are carefully reviewed and selected by an independent panel of experts. Scopus AI uses only metadata and abstracts from Scopus documents published since 2013 to ensure that the answers are based on the latest knowledge.

Scopus AI is now available to all Scopus customers worldwide. More information can be found on the Scopus AI website.
