SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son is planning to raise as much as $100 billion for a new AI chip company that could compete with Nvidia, according to Bloomberg. SoftBank is considering raising funds from Middle Eastern investors and backing Arm Holdings Plc, a chip developer that was owned by SoftBank before it went public last year, the report says. Arm CEO Rene Haas, who also sits on SoftBank's board, is advising the new chip venture. These efforts are reportedly separate from talks Son is having with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about raising billions of dollars to build out the AI infrastructure.
Microsoft has announced a €3.2 billion investment to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in Germany, the largest investment in the country in the company's 40-year history. The investment will double the capacity of Microsoft's cloud region in Frankfurt and build new infrastructure in North Rhine-Westphalia. By 2025, Microsoft plans to train more than 1.2 million people in digital skills. The expansion will help meet the growing demand for AI-specific computing power and cloud solutions while enabling the training and application of new AI models and services on the Microsoft Azure platform. Microsoft aims to support industries such as manufacturing, automotive, finance, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, and medical technology.
Andrej Karpathy, a leading AI researcher, has announced his departure from OpenAI. In a statement, Karpathy clarified that his decision was not the result of any problems or "drama" at OpenAI, and praised the "really strong team" and a "very exciting roadmap." Karpathy, known for his expertise in AI and his work as head of AI at Tesla, plans to focus on personal projects. His work at OpenAI was rumored to include the development of a personal AI assistant, similar to the concept of "JARVIS" from Iron Man, and he is looking into AI-driven operating systems. Karpathy was already at OpenAI in 2016, before returning to OpenAI about a year ago after working at Tesla in a leadership role developing AI systems from 2017 to 2022.
