Chinese AI jewel Deepseek reportedly restricts employee travel amid AI security concerns

Some developers of the Chinese AI start-up Deepseek have apparently had to surrender their passports and are no longer allowed to leave China without further ado, probably due to concerns about data loss or takeovers. Since the success of the "R1" AI model, Deepseek has become increasingly important to China's government: CEO Liang Wenfeng has been invited to talks with high-ranking politicians and local authorities are already using the software. China's authorities generally advise leading AI experts not to travel to the USA in order to prevent sensitive information being leaked abroad or experts being put under pressure there.
