Scientists see potential in AI, but hesitate to embrace it, survey finds

An international survey of almost 5,000 researchers from over 70 countries conducted by scientific publisher Wiley shows that artificial intelligence will become an integral part of scientific work over the next two years. Despite the potential, only 45 percent of respondents are currently actually using AI tools in their research, with ethical concerns, fear of inaccuracies and hallucinations from AI systems, and lack of support and training being the most common reasons for reluctance. According to the scientists, AI can already perform better than humans in areas such as preparing manuscripts, processing large amounts of data and disseminating scientific findings.

Google signals openness to AI defense contracts, dropping previous restrictions

Google has revised its ethical AI guidelines and now allows the use of its AI technology for weapons and surveillance, citing global competition for AI leadership. According to the new guidelines, the technology should be used in accordance with principles of international law and human rights. Unintended or harmful consequences are to be minimized through human supervision and testing. Other AI labs such as OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic and Microsoft have also changed their stance and are working with defense contractors or providing their technology to the US military, demonstrating a trend in the industry.
